During construction, water aids mixing, but excess weakens concrete. Superplasticizers—also called high-range water reducers—solve this by cutting water use by 10–30%. They upgrade traditional plasticizers, making concrete easier to handle, pour, and shape.

Common types include polycarboxylate (PCE) and sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF). These improve concrete flow and performance during construction.
